What You Need to Know About Penis Envy Magic Mushrooms
The most distinctive characteristic of Penis Envy (PE) mushrooms is their appearance. They have an exceptionally dense stem that grants them their phallic shape (a.k.a. penis shape).
They have a pale and rounded cap, lack of veil, and strong blue bruising, which indicates high psilocybin content.
Since their caps barely open from the stem, they have a hard time spreading their spores, which is quite ironic given their shape!
This clearly indicates that they were selectively bred by humans. It’d be almost impossible for them to reproduce in nature on their own. In recent years, more and more sub-varieties and hybrids of PE were developed due to their popularity. The most well-known are Albino Penis Envy, Homestead, Texas Penis Envy, and Penis Envy Uncut.
The typical Penis Envy trip lasts between four and six hours. Due to their higher potency (more on that later), it’s recommended that you consume roughly 30% less dried weight of PE shrooms than other cubensis strains.
According to The Third Wave, a psychedelics educational platform, these are the recommended dosages for PE mushrooms:
- Microdose: 1 to 0.5 grams
- Mild dose: 5 to 1 gram
- Medium dose: 1 to 2 grams
- Strong dose: 2 to 3 grams
- Heroic dose: above 3 grams
What Is the Scientific Name for Penis Envy Mushrooms?
The scientific name for Penis Envy mushrooms is Psilocybe cubensis.
However, inside the P. cubensis realm, there are plenty of sub-species that resulted from genetic mutations and selective breeding. As of now, there isn’t a scientific name exclusively referring to Penis Envy mushrooms.
They’re often confused for Phallus impudicus, the common stinkhorn, due to their similar phallic shape but this is a completely different species.
P. impudicus are edible and non-psychedelic mushrooms believed to have medicinal properties. They’re best known for their characteristic foul odor.
Where Does Penis Envy Mushrooms Originally Came From?
In the early 70s, legendary mycologist Terrence McKenna found a patch of wild Psilocybe cubensis growing in the Amazon rainforest. Although shrooms were already illegal at the time, spores were not; so, he brought them back to the US. An interesting fact is that there are two versions of the story about how the genetic mutations that turned P. cubensis into the Penis Envy mushroom took place.
The most famous version involves Steven Pollock, the well-known magic mushroom enthusiast, getting a hold of those spores and accidentally producing PE mushrooms while cloning and isolating P. cubensis.
More recently, a more believable recount surfaced. Apparently, Rich Gee, a Washington-based mycologist, got Psilocybe cubensis spores from his friend and co-author, Jules Stevens. Then, he purified the spores and used his famous aquarium system to grow them.
Long story short, a few variations of P. cubensis emerged; and by cloning the biggest mushrooms with the strongest blue bruising repeatedly, Penis Envy mushrooms eventually came to exist. Blue bruising is used as an indicator of potency.
Magic mushrooms’ psychedelic effects are due to certain compounds in their composition — namely, psilocybin and psilocin. So, Penis Envy mushrooms have similar effects to all other psychedelic mushrooms.
However, users often report different and much stronger effects with PE shrooms. Some even claim their experience was more similar to DMT use than magic mushrooms.
There’s little scientific evidence supporting these claims, so far. Also, it’d be hard to confirm this since there are many other factors in play, like setting and what they ate that day, for example.
- Above-average powerful visuals, including seeing halos around lights and objects and geometric patterns (with closed eyes);
- Deep introspection;
- Joy and euphoria;
- Abstract thinking;
- A strong connection to the surrounding nature, people, and animals;
- Temporal distortion;
- Synesthesia (with high doses).
PE mushrooms are also known to cause strong emotional shifts, both good and bad. The best way to deal with it is to remain calm and accept those emotions in a peaceful and detached way — trying to resist these emotional shifts is one of the greatest causes of bad trips.
Some possible undesired effects include nausea, vomiting, anxiety, paranoia, profuse sweating, and dehydration, among others.
How Strong Are Penis Envy Mushrooms?
According to anecdotal evidence and some recent lab analysis, the Penis Envy mushroom is one of the strongest out there.
In fact, in the Oakland Hyphae Spring 2021 Psilocybin Cup, Penis Envy ranked as the third most potent strain with 2.90% of its dry weight being tryptamines.
Carl Wagon, an experienced mushroom grower and psychonaut, used a swimming analogy to explain how much stronger PE shrooms are from other strains.
According to him, a normal mushroom trip is like swimming in a peaceful ocean while playing ball with your friends…
A PE trip is like swimming in a freezing, bottomless part of the North Atlantic Ocean while battling 12-foot waves.
