Psilocybe fimetaria magic mushrooms can be found growing solitary to gregariously in grassy areas with rich soil on horse or cow dung. They often fruit in large rings, and do so from September to November. This species is widely distributed, with reports from British Columbia, New Brunswick, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Chile, Great Britain, and Europe. However, it is not very common.

Pileas
When young, caps are convex to plano-convex (flat on one side and rounded on the other), and become slightly bell-shaped to broadly convex upon maturity sometimes with a sharp umbo. Colour is pale reddish-brown to honey to ochre.

Broadly attached to the stem and a whitish clay colour at first, becoming dark reddish-brown upon sporulation.

Stipe
Cylindrical and flexible, and may be slightly swollen at the base. Covered in white fibrils towards the cap and a narrow annulus from a partial veil. White at first, soon becoming brownish-yellow to reddish-brown with handling and age. May have blue staining at the base.
