Gymnopilus cyanopalmicola magic mushrooms were recently discovered in 2006 by Mexican mycologist Laura Guzmán-Dávalos on the roots of a dead palm in the main city square of Puerto de Veracruz.

Pileas
Caps are yellow and convex, becoming planar and 5-10cm in diameter upon maturity. Scales are erect towards the center, and appressed towards the edge.

Range from crowded and broadly to narrowly attached to the stem. May also become distended (ventricose).

Stipe
Long with relatively slender stems that are pale yellow, but may become purple to dark brown when bruised. Also has a fast fading and membranous annulus.
