Do Magic Mushrooms Become Weaker in Tea?

Generally speaking, the answer is actually yes, but not to a particularly large degree. The active ingredients in your shrooms are psilocybin and psilocin.

In the case of psilocin, the chemical actually does degrade a bit in heat, so tea will cause one of the key active ingredients to become somewhat less effective. The loss of effect is likely not going to give you a less impactful experience as the degradation is nominal.

And of course, drinking your shrooms in tea can make the nausea typically associated with your trip less problematic.

How Many Magic Mushrooms Do You Need To Make Shroom Tea?

If you’re relatively new to psilocybin mushrooms, you’ll want to take it easy. Diluting one gram of mushrooms for use in your tea is probably a good place to start; remember to wait for at least 90 minutes to assess whether you’re satisfied with the dosing before you consider adding more. If you are ready for something a bit stronger, 3 – 4 grams should do it.

  1. Get the mushroom into as small a particle as possible. Grinding them down with a mortar and pestle or your trusty cannabis grinder should work.
  2. At this stage, we can introduce you to one of our tricks and tips: ginger. Grinding fresh ginger into your brew can also reduce the nausea commonly associated with eating shrooms.
  3. Add your hot water any tea that you like. It’s tea – it doesn’t have to taste terrible!
  4. Mix your ground up shrooms (and ginger) and tea bags into the boiling water.
  5. Let it steep for quite awhile. The heat and water take your soluble shroom powder and leech the active ingredients out of it.

How Long Before My Shroom Tea Starts to Work?

One of the benefits of drinking your psilocybin is that it acts more quickly. Solid mushrooms must be dissolved by your stomach acids before they are absorbed into your bloodstream. Since the psilocybin has completely dissolved into your tea already, it is absorbed much more quickly by your body. The onset of effects can be cut down to as little as 10 minutes.

How Quickly Should I Drink my Mushroom Tea?

The speed with which you drink your tea may affect how quickly you feel its effects. Drinking your tea down in one gulp is thought to lead to a very fast onset and more intense experience. This seems to be somewhat subjective depending on the individual.

Some proponents of shroom tea believe that it can give the consumer a shorter duration trip; without much clinical evidence to point to, you may need to decide this for yourself.

Risks of Consuming Mushroom Tea

The fast onset of your trip causes many mushroom tea consumers to believe the effects to be more intense; again, this may be subjective, and not advised for the newbie. Your trip may end somewhat more quickly, but everyone’s consumption experience is different, and you may find yourself feeling the after-effects of your experience even 24 hours later.

Psilocybin can be dangerous for people with a history of serious mental health conditions, or those on pharmaceutical treatments for those conditions. Always check with a medical professional to make sure you don’t have any potential side effects.
